Item Types are the technology by which you can bind your data to the OpenRoads Platform.

It means you can add your data fields to the data fields delivered by the off-the-shelf software.

{tip title="They're just 'data fields', people!" content="'Item Types' sounds abstract, I prefer to use the term 'custom data' or 'your data'.  When talking to those who are not doing the configuration, 'data field' is far more informative and 'plannable' than repeating technical jargon (AutoDesk calls their equivalent tech 'Property Sets' - which is definitely more direct)" class="bg-text-subtle"}[Jeff's two cents on the terminology]{/tip}

It's fully integrated into the platform, consistent with how "native" data fields work:

  • Visible in Properties dialog
  • Changeable in Properties dialog (including bulk selection - they obey the same rules as native data)
  • Reportable
  • Query-able
  • Usable in View Display Rules (which is an amazing new(er) technology that will become part of your everyday user experience soon)
